Update on the Adopt a Chios Mastiha Tree Sustainability Project

CHIOS – Lenia Ziglaki of Adopt Chios Trees shared an update with The National Herald on the progress of the Adopt a Chios Mastiha Tree sustainability project that began in 2019.

Reflecting on the journey of the initiative, she explained that the project was created with the aspiration to introduce more people to the world of Chios mastiha while strengthening a cultivation tradition recognized by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The initiative aims not only to support the cultivation itself, but also to present mastiha as a living cultural identity deeply connected to the people and villages of southern Chios.

Since its launch, the project has built a growing international community of adopters across 22 countries spanning Asia, Europe, Africa, America, and Australia. Through direct communication, updates, photographs, and social media storytelling, adopters remain connected to their tree and the yearly cultivation cycle.

Lenia also expressed her gratitude to The National Herald for supporting the project during its earliest stages and helping bring visibility both to the initiative and to the island of Chios itself.

Alongside the article, photographs from Chios were shared to highlight the landscape, traditions, and culture surrounding mastiha cultivation, while inviting people from around the world to visit the island and experience it firsthand.
